Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum

Posted by Reporter on Tuesday

Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty SerumNo7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum makes a visible improvement to the skin, reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles when used long term, according to an independent year long clinical study. Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum ($22.99) is available at Target stores nationwide and on Target.com beginning June 24th.

No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum was extensively tested in an independent 12 month trial, six months of which was double blind, funded by Boots. Seventy percent of the volunteers using the product showed a marked improvement in the appearance of photo-aged skin. This study and the revolutionary research is the latest step on Boots journey to provide further independent, compelling proof of the performance of the No7 products, and sets the bar for other beauty companies to test their products rigorously.

“With this research, we have shown a commercially available anti-aging product can actually improve the appearance of facial wrinkles when used in the long-term,” said Stewart Long, Boots Skincare Scientific Advisor. “To our knowledge, this is the first time such benefits have been reported for a non-prescription cosmetic ‘anti-aging’ product. Consumers purchasing cosmetic skincare items can choose from a variety of products, which have only limited published data regarding their efficacy. In undertaking this study, we feel we have answered our customers, and the market, proving that Boots No7 products really can help to improve skin’s appearance.”

A rich super-intensive formula clinically proven to improve the appearance of deep wrinkles, No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It uses a formula containing retinyl palmitate, antioxidants and firming peptides combined with extract of alfalfa to produce a more intensive wrinkle fighting action.

The results are instantaneous, as people using Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum report an immediate difference and more radiant, softer and smoother skin after initial use. After two weeks skin feels firmer, and after three weeks deep lines and wrinkles are less visible. By four weeks skin is younger looking. Long term, No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum has been independently clinically proven to visibly improve deep lines and wrinkles and the appearance of sun damaged skin.

*No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum is the new name for No7 Refine & Rewind Beauty Serum.

Makeover for Sunscreen

Posted by Reporter on

MintelThe days of slathering on thick, white, impossible-to-spread sunscreen are fading away. Mintel Beauty Innovation, which tracks new beauty and personal care launches globally, reports that the newest sun-blocking products are much trendier and easier to apply than their predecessors.

Spray-on sunscreen
– Spray sunscreen hit the market with a splash, promising easier, faster application with equally effective sun protection. Mintel Beauty Innovation reports that nearly one in five (18%) sunscreen products launched in the past year came in an aerosol can.

Powdered suncare – The next wave of sun protection could come in powder form. Featuring well-established sun-blockers like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, new powdered sunscreens are trendy, convenient and lightweight on the skin. This format is currently seen from just a few brands like Bare Escentuals and Peter Thomas Roth.

“Let’s face it: no one loved the texture and grease of older sunscreens, but people used them because they needed to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays,” comments Taya Tomasello, senior beauty analyst for Mintel Beauty Innovation. “The latest innovative sunscreens offer sun protection in more appealing, easier-to-use ways.”

More natural ingredients – In addition to easier application, many new sunscreens go au natural. New sun protection products claiming “botanical” or “herbal” have steadily increased in prevalence since 2005; so far in 2009, these claims have appeared on nearly one in three launches tracked by Mintel Beauty Innovation. John Masters Organics even features a Natural Mineral Sunscreen containing ECOCERT- and USDA-certified organic ingredients.

Skincare-inspired sunblock – Many people use skincare products with UV protection*, so sunscreens now offer skincare-like benefits. Claims such as “moisturizing,” “oil free” and “anti-aging” increasingly appear on new sunscreen products. For example, Niadyne says its 100% Mineral Sunscreen can improve skin tone, while Hissyfit’s Body Double Moisturizing Sunscreen claims anti-aging benefits.

“Sunscreen faces tough competition from skincare and make-up enhanced with UV protection,” states Taya Tomasello. “In the past 12 months, one in 10 new cosmetic and skincare launches contained sun-blocking ingredients. Especially now as people try to save on personal care, products that offer multiple benefits have an upper hand. Manufacturers need to show that their sunscreens provide the best UV protection, while being fun to use, convenient and good for the skin.”

*In a November 2008 Mintel survey about facial skincare, 35% of respondents said their usual products contain sunscreen or UVB/UVA protection. For more information on Mintel, please visit www.mintel.com.

Making the Most of Your Beauty Budget

Posted by Reporter on

Medicis AestheticsTough economic times have women and men searching for value in their personal expenses. No longer are trendy fashion statements considered an essential buy. More and more, consumers are investing their dollars into aesthetic treatments aimed at improving or enhancing appearance, and those treatments that have long-lasting results.

Suggestions to make the most of your beauty budget with prescription and physician-recommended skin care products:

1. Choose skincare products by power, not by price. Retinoids (vitamin A) are demonstrated by clinical studies to help your skin look and act younger, stay clearer and simply glow, and are FDA approved for treating fine lines and wrinkles(4).
2. Medically-based peels and laser treatments when administered by a healthcare professional are designed to improve the look and condition of your skin. Invest in a doctor who will evaluate your skin, make the right recommendations and monitor your results.
3. Protect your investment. No matter your beauty buy, practice diligent use of sun protection regardless of your outdoor exposure or the cloud cover. Choose products with both UVA and UVB protection specifically designed for your skin type.

Aesthetic injections with dermal fillers are another option for improving appearance, and require a trained professional to inject. “You cannot cut corners, which simply invites risk,” says New York dermatologist Jeannette Graf, M.D. Even at market prices, aesthetic dermal filler injections can provide excellent value for your beauty dollar with proper treatment and full correction of facial folds. Graf cites the obvious benefits: “Your skin is on display at all times. The result of aesthetic injections such as Restylane(2) and Perlane(3) is to fill moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds for a face that looks younger. Perlane(3), is designed for deeper injection (deep dermis to superficial subcutis).”(1),(3) Clinical research demonstrated that Restylane provides beautiful results that last up to 18 months with only one follow-up treatment.* “This is an investment in your appearance that is visible every day, no matter what you are wearing,” says Dr. Graf.(1)

*In a clinical study, at least 95% of patients treated with Restylane showed an overall duration of effectiveness for 18 months from initial treatment when they returned for a follow-up treatment at 4.5 or 9 months.(2)

Important Safety Considerations of Restylane and Perlane

Either Restylane or Perlane can be used to restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds), ask your physician which is right for you. After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause another outbreak. In rare circumstances, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use either product if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years, you should not use Restylane or Perlane.

Restylane or Perlane should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to certain microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria; by people with previous bad allergies to drugs that have required in-hospital treatment; or by people with bleeding disorders. Injections should not be made anywhere except the skin or just under the skin.

Patients should be limited to 6.0 mL per treatment. The safety or effectiveness of Restylane( )and Perlane for the treatment of anatomic regions other than nasolabial folds have not been established in controlled clinical studies.

The use of Restylane or Perlane at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. Use of either product in these instances could delay healing or make your skin problems worse.

Restylane and Perlane are available only through a licensed practitioner. Complete product and safety information is available at www.RestylaneUSA.com.

(Restylane)( and )(Perlane)( are not approved for combination use)(, or)( with any other product. )

Scientific Skin Care by Kenneth Beer MD

Posted by Reporter on

Scientific Skin CareThe following is a statement from Kenneth Beer MD:

As a cosmetic dermatologist and dermatopathologist, I am trained to look at the structure and function of the skin. In my clinical practice, I see patients several times each year and keep their skin healthy. I also try to help them look their best. This may involve using lasers or other treatments to renovate the skin but it also requires maintaining the improvement once the patient gets home. In an effort to accomplish this goal, I created Scientific by Kenneth Beer MD to help improve the tone, texture and luminosity of my patient’s skin. After evaluating existing product lines, I realized that most companies focus on wide growth distribution where I like to focus on active ingredients in the products. By trying to address all of the common skin care problems they end up fixing none. Rather than have a multitude of products which don’t work together, I decided to focus on a limited number of products for a limited number of people. My goal is to provide professional grade skincare for my patients.

The line incorporates molecules such as hyaluronic acid filling spheres, Gigawhite (a botanical brightener), retinol and ferulic acid. These ingredients help to decrease the appearance of age spots, provide anti oxidants to the collagen and may help to renovate the skin.

Products from our skincare line are designed to deliver results to help restore the structure and function of the skin giving a more youthful appearance.

Beat The White Flour Blues

Posted by Reporter on

If you need a jack for your eyelids in the morning or at any other time of the day, perhaps you have the sugar blues! No? Ever heard of the white flour blues?

If you are sleepy and able, catch a quick snore (10-20 minutes should do the trick) and then when the munchies hit, have a healthy snack ready and waiting: fruit, trail mix, carrot sticks, water with lemon, nuts, or chomp on some gum if it’s the oral fixation you’re after. I couldn’t resist posting this incredible painting. It resonated a little too well with me–being that white flour makes me sleepy. It is rare that I eat it, but when I do, my eyelids get heavy and my mind gets mushy. For me, there is no good reason to eat white flour, not even convenience. I HATE being tired!!

An FYI about wheat: “Today, though, most wheat is processed and refined. The milling process first cracks the wheat grains, then pulverizes them with a series of rollers. In this way the starchy carbohydrate-rich center, called the endosperm, is separated from both the dark fibrous bran and the wheat embryo, called the wheat germ. At each stage of milling, something is lost. Removing the wheat germ pulls out vitamins and unsaturated fats. Whacking away the branny outer layer removes fiber, magnesium, and more vitamins. By the time whole-wheat grains have been turned into white flour, the final product is a pale shadow of the original, literally and nutritionally.

Even if whole-grain and high-fiber foods have no effect on cancer, their impact on heart disease and diabetes is reason enough to eat grains in this form instead of their stripped-down counterparts…..The fiber in whole grains delays absorption of glucose and eases the workload for the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. Fiber helps lower cholesterol levels in the blood……The bran layer of many grains contains essential minerals such as magnesium, selenium, copper, and manganese that may be important in reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes.” -Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating by Walter C. Willett, M.D. pgs. 110, 113

Having a hard time switching from white flour to whole grains? Here are some suggestions from Eat, Drink and Be Healthy:

Start slowly and add new grains or products as your appetite grows for these tasty foods:

  • Eat whole grains for breakfast
  • Discover whole-grain breads
  • Forget the French fries-Instead of potatoes or white rice, cook up some brown rice to accompany a meal. Or get really adventurous and try some “newer” grains like kasha, bulgur, oat groats, wheat berries or cracked wheat, millet, quinoa, or hulled barley.
  • Whole-wheat pasta can be a delicious alternative (I have to agree! It’s my new favorite!)
  • Bake with whole-wheat flour (Beware, sometimes if you switch out whole wheat for white entirely, the results can be devastating. Apparently, making pasta from scratch requires you to follow the recipe exactly. My whole wheat ravioli were as hard as rocks. Find a tried and true recipe or you may end up wasting ingredients like I do!)
  • Pester your grocery store’s manager or the chefs of your favorite restaurants -(pgs.115-116)

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bob’s Red Mill, check out the website and order virtually any grain in existance. This has to be one of my favorite things about Portland.

Have a wonderful day and please share with me any and all whole grain recipes you might have.
