Is Coca-Cola Hiding Something From Consumers?

Posted by Reporter on

I’m not sure how to present some information I stumbled upon this morning.

I don’t want to slander or pick on a company, so I am currently trying to decide how to present the info. Coke, if you are reading this, I would love a comment from a representative on this one.

I’ve given myself some time to think it over, and I think my role as a “sugar” blogger, is to be objective in this case and just share the information. Actually, what I am about to share will speak for itself.

For those of you who are health nuts and are very careful about what you eat and drink, this information may not be meaningful to you, however, I believe the implications are extremely important.

Dare I draw this out and make you wait any longer?

Okay, here is what I discovered accidentally while researching some things online this morning:

Coca-Cola does not list “sugars” or “high fructose corn syrup” in its “Soft Drink Nutrition Information For Carbonated Beverages” pdf. on their home website. I looked elsewhere on their website for information about sugars and found Q&A about sweeteners in general, but I was after finding out how much sugar is in a Coke Classic. (Why I wanted to know is a different story!) Finally, discouraged by their website giving me the run-around without producing information on this, I bought a Coke from the vending machine downstairs in my building, feeling extremely guilty the entire time. I read the nutrition information on the can and left it sitting next to my computer. A few hours later it disappeared. Jeff? Ah well……

Here is what The Coca-Cola Company does list under nutrition information: Calories, Carbohydrates, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Caffeine, Saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame Potassium, and Sucralose [which is generic Splenda].

Sorry, I realized I can’t just share this information without commenting on it…

What I find fascinating is that “Phosphorus” is listed, for example, but not “sugars”. Why Phosphorus? Who in the world is interested in knowing the amount of Phosphorus in their drink?

Also, I find it quite interesting that they provide a listing of the various artificial sweeteners, yet no “sugars”. Now, to be fair, they do list “carbohydrates” and sugar obviously falls under this category, but they do not specifically label this category “sugars”. On the can they do list “sugars” but not on their website.

I feel as though The Coca-Cola Company is not being transparent. If I was selling a nutrition-less product, at 39 grams of sugars per 12 ounces, I might not want to share all this information, either.

Preventive Tips for Healthful Aging

Posted by Reporter on

CrestLeading women’s health expert, Donnica L. Moore, MD, wants women to know that healthful aging depends on our current habits. “Our bodies’ health - particularly as we age - requires that we take precautionary measures to strengthen ourselves,” explains the women’s health expert and advocate, physician educator and media commentator. “Skin, teeth and bones are all areas that are often overlooked or taken for granted until they give us problems. And once we have certain problems associated with aging or premature wear and tear, the corrective measures may be extensive and expensive.” Dr. Moore believes that certain preventive habits started earlier in life may help avoid these consequences and ensure that our skin, teeth and bones are healthy well into advanced age.

SKIN: There are more than 1 million cases of skin cancer in the United States per year and approximately 8,650 Americans will die from malignant melanoma this year (American Cancer Society. Cancer Facts & Figures 2009. Atlanta: American Cancer Society; 2009). This is also the leading cause of cancer death for women in their 20’s (Women’s Health for Life, D. Moore.  DK 2009; p. 28). However, skin cancer is largely preventable. Women should enjoy the outdoors, but take precautions everyday, says Dr. Moore. “Be sure to apply and reapply sun block routinely in addition to wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a cover-up if necessary.”

TEETH: “Due to an increased awareness of healthy eating and its effects on the body, many women are making better food choices than before,” states Dr. Moore. However, enamel loss can occur when acids from everyday food and beverages — even healthy ones, such as fruit, yogurt, salsa, orange juice and sports drinks — attack the tooth surface. If left untreated, enamel loss can lead to larger issues such as cavities, sensitivity, and even oral surgery. In addition to reducing consumption of foods and beverages that aren’t in the best interest of one’s health in general (such as sodas or other sugary drinks), Dr. Moore recommends using a toothpaste like Crest Pro-Health Enamel Shield. It contains the active ingredient stannous fluoride, which binds to enamel to create a micro-thin shield against acid attack.

BONES: Approximately 8 million American women currently have osteoporosis and another 27 million women are estimated to have low bone mass (osteopenia), a major risk factor for osteoporosis (National Osteoporosis Foundation, http://www.nof.org/osteoporosis/diseasefacts.htm). Dr. Moore explains, “Women should discuss their risk factors for osteoporosis with their doctors and inquire about the correct age to have a bone density test.” Her general preventive strategies for optimal bone health include eating a diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D (or supplementing if necessary), avoiding tobacco and alcohol as much as possible, and incorporating weight-bearing exercise — like walking or jogging with hand weights and strength training — into your daily routine.

Dr. Moore summarizes, “Most women find that small steps — in the right direction — can yield big health benefits.” When it comes to protecting skin, teeth and bones, women may not see the benefits in the short term, but they will reap the benefits of improved health habits in the long term.

Availability

  • Crest Pro-Health Enamel Shield rinse is also available in Fresh Clean Mint Flavor (440ml; $4.59). Crest Pro-Health Enamel Shield rinse, a complement to the toothpaste, helps strengthen enamel to protect against acid attack caused by plaque bacteria. It contains Sodium Fluoride, which helps prevent cavities, and without the burn of alcohol.
  • The Oral-B CrossAction PRO-HEALTH Manual toothbrush is available for $4.49 (all suggested retail prices). Oral-B CrossAction PRO-HEALTH toothbrush combines three features - CrissCross bristles, gum stimulators and a textured tongue and cheek cleaner - to provide seven essential oral care benefits in one brush for a cleaner, healthier mouth. Renova

Posted by Reporter on

RenovaIn 2008, the global anti-aging skincare market approached $15 billion(1), with 32 percent of U.S. facial skincare product launches boasting anti-aging claims(2) many over-the-counter products are claiming to achieve comparable benefits as prescription anti-aging treatments. The interest in anti-aging products continues to grow, but FDA-approved prescription products with rigorous efficacy and safety standards are still the preferred option when it comes to first-line therapy.

While there is a seemingly endless array of cosmetic products to choose from when it comes to anti-aging products, there is a shortage of products that deliver consistent, optimal results. In these economic times, patients should consult an expert to ensure that they get the best results for their money.

“It is important for consumers to consult an expert before beginning an anti-aging regimen. A dermatologist can provide invaluable insights on what will be most effective for your individual skin type,” says Dr. David Bank, Founder and Director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, New York. “I always tell my patients to accept no
substitutions: FDA approval means a product is safe and effective. And, with proper and consistent use, a prescription product provides real, long-lasting and impressive results.”

Although many cosmetic products promise fast results, the results can be short-lived and superficial. Patients who use RENOVA (tretinoin cream) 0.02%, the #1 prescribed, FDA-approved topical treatment clinically proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, have seen consistent improvement with ongoing use. In a clinical trial, 85 percent of patients showed continuous
improvement over 52 weeks of treatment.

While thousands of cosmetic topical anti-aging skincare products hit shelves every year, none are subjected to the rigorous scientific testing required to gain FDA approval. As a result, none have proven to be more effective than RENOVA in reducing fine facial wrinkles and giving skin a younger, more radiant appearance.

“I’ve been prescribing RENOVA for 12 years,” says Dr. Bank, “RENOVA is a retinoid that contains tretinoin, the gold standard of retinoid therapy for 30 years. I consider RENOVA an essential part of a long-term skincare strategy and recommend it in conjunction with other anti-aging procedures including injectables, lasers and microdermabrasion.”

For more information, visit www.orthodermatologics.com.

RENOVA 0.02% is indicated as an adjunctive agent for use in the mitigation (palliation) of fine facial wrinkles in patients who use comprehensive skin care and sunlight avoidance programs. RENOVA 0.02% does not eliminate wrinkles, repair sun-damaged skin, reverse photoaging, or restore more youthful or younger skin. The safety and efficacy of using RENOVA 0.02% daily, for greater than 12 months, have not been established. RENOVA 0.02% is proven effective on lightly pigmented skin, Fitzpatrick skin types I, II and III. Do not use RENOVA 0.02% if the patient is taking drugs known to be photosensitizers, pregnant, attempting pregnancy, or nursing. RENOVA 0.02% is a dermal irritant. Almost all patients experience skin reactions, including dryness, peeling, burning/stinging, erythema, and itching. In some patients, this may be severe.

Treat Adult Acne - How to Deal with it

Posted by Reporter on

Acne while usually appears during our teenage years, sometimes extends up to a person’s latter life. That’s why many are bothered about this skin condition and are looking for ways to remedy and treat adult acne.

Indeed, those aged 20 and above can still suffer from flare ups. What can be the cause of this skin problem? Before focusing on how to treat adult acne, one must know what is the source or origin of this condition. One reason why some individuals become sufferers of the skin condition is the mental stress. Likewise, another reason for flare ups to happen in your face is hormonal imbalance. Hormones actually are a major reason for the start and aggravation of acne.

In order not to bother with finding ways of treating adult acne, you must prevent it from happening. You most likely not have to treat adult acne if it will not appear in the first place. First of all, start a healthy diet. Another good habit that will prevent flare ups from happening is good amount of water every day as well as sufficient rest.

However, if you indeed get afflicted with acne, specific medication and special skin care cream are great way of treating adult acne. Many of these creams are available over the counter. However, it would be better if you ask for professional advice particularly from a licensed doctor such as a dermatologist in order to make sure that what you will apply to your skin will actually treat adult acne and not make it worse.
