With health officials nationwide already preparing for the upcoming cold and flu season, Environmental Solutions International (ESI) introduces Smart & Silky and Kids Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizers as another weapon in the illness-prevention arsenal. These unique, alcohol-free, moisturizing hand sanitizers are available at retailers nationwide (visit www.smartandsilky.com for more details). Hand sanitizers have been proven effective in decreasing the spread of germs and illness, prompting many—especially parents—to put them at the top of their must-have list. The Healthy Hands, Healthy Families Study found that the more hand sanitizer used by a given family, the better the chances of reducing the spread of some organisms.
The Kids Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizer is an answer for parents trying to keep their kids healthy and safe. The sanitizer feels natural, not sticky, on the hands making it a natural choice for kids. Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizer is just as effective as standard alcohol-based hand sanitizers, but even safer because it is not flammable or poisonous.
The Importance of an Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizer
For safety reasons, many are now pushing for the use of alcohol-free sanitizers for families and children, and ESI has responded with its Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizer line of products.
“Smart & Silky is alcohol-free making it safer, than alcohol-based hand sanitizers,” said Ken Arnswald, ESI. “Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be dangerous, especially when put in or on the wrong hands.”
Today’s most-common sanitizers consist of up to 70 percent ethyl alcohol—a higher alcohol percentage than many hard liquors. It’s been reported that a little 2 oz. bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer can equal four shots of vodka. These alcohol-based hand sanitizers can pose a serious poisoning risk to children if consumed inappropriately. In fact, in 2006 The Association of Poison Control Centers reported 12,000 cases of child-related alcohol poisoning linked to hand sanitizer products that contain alcohol. The Journal of School Nursing also stated that alcohol-based sanitizers are undesirable in schools or on school buses as they can present a safety hazard to children because they are flammable and irritating to eyes and open wounds. Some schools have even banned alcohol-based hand sanitizers and others are considering bans.
Like many standard hand sanitizers, Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizer is 99.99 percent effective against fighting many common illness-causing germs. What’s unique about Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizer’s alcohol-free formula is that it is non-flammable, moisturizing and available in unscented, hypoallergenic kid-friendly formulas.
How Often Do You Wash Your Hands? Not Nearly Enough
The key to sanitizing hands is eliminating harmful bacteria from the skin. This can be done by washing with soap and water, or by killing the bacteria as done with hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers are especially effective when you consider that just 33 percent of those who do wash their hands use soap, and only 16 percent really wash their hands long enough. What’s more, only 17 percent of Americans wash their hands after shaking hands, and just 67 percent wash after using the restroom.
The public has responded and hand sanitizer use is on the rise. In fact, AC Nielsen notes that hand sanitizer sales have experienced double-digit growth since 2003, and a recent Harvard study shows a 60 percent reduction in illness through sanitizer use. Now, with Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizers, those using hand sanitizers, and those who soon will be, have a unique, safer option for killing germs that can cause the spread of illness.
Keeping Hands Cleaner and Refreshed
The active ingredient in Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizer is benzalkonium chloride, an antimicrobial that is also used in hair conditioners and skin lotions. The AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) Journal recently concluded that benzalkonium chloride antimicrobials have a greater-sustained antibacterial activity than alcohol-based hand sanitizers. The Journal reported that water-based hand sanitizers were effective without irritation after repeated use, a problem with alcohol-based sanitizers. It also stated that frequent and prolonged use of alcohol-containing hand sanitizer products can be counterproductive to hand sanitation and can damage the skin.
Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizers leave the skin refreshed with silky conditioners, making it excellent for everyday use or for people with easily irritated, chapped or sensitive skin. The unique formula is non-skin sensitizing and does not use polymer thickeners or silicones, which can actually trap dead skin cells that become a feeding ground for germs. Many other non-alcohol-based sanitizers contain triclosan or thyme/pine oil, which can sensitize the skin, contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, have limited effectiveness or leave tacky residues. Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizers act more like a lotion by not stripping away essential skin layers and oils.
Smart & Silky Foaming Hand Sanitizers retail between $2.69–$4.49, and are available in 250ml (8.5 oz.) and a convenient 50ml (1.69 oz.) travel size. It comes in an efficient hands-free pump that allows for four times the packaging utility of gel-based alcohol sanitizers – more than 120 pumps for the 50ml bottle and more than 600 pumps for the 250ml bottle.

DailyMakeover.com Updates from the Shows…
Woodstock Waves at Vivienne Tam
Vivienne Tam harkened back to the ‘60s with undulating Janis Joplin waves and butterfly-inspired lashes. Lead makeup artist Gina Brooke for Shu Uemura played up models’ eyes with Shu Uemura Farfallina False Lashes against a matte, uncontoured canvas. Lips were softly defined with Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited in Beige 935, a nude-apricot. Nails were painted with M2M in Fox Trot, a sand-colored cream polish. Lead hairstylist Kevin Mancuso for Nexxus created waves with a large curling iron with a tiny knot tied into the hair just above the ear.
Shellacked Locks at Chado Ralph Rucci
Lead stylist Laurent Philippon for Bumble and bumble used an entire bottle of Bumble and bumble Gel on each model to create a slicked back, plasticine organic-shaped updo sewn together with visible hairpins. MAC makeup artist Tom Pecheux swooped charcoal shadow into a triangular shape in the outer corners before bisecting each models’ fringe with powerful faux lashes on the outer half of the eye.
Slicked Back Rolls At Jeremy Laing
It was all about the hair backstage at Jeremy Laing. Davines lead stylist Marco Santini created a strong slicked back look that had a heavy emphasis on a wet-textured finish. MAC lead makeup artist Hung Vanngo kept makeup soft and natural in contrast to the high-concept hair. He used a blend of purple and aubergine eyeshadows to create a sheer wash of color on the lids. He curled the lashes, then used a flesh-toned, nude brow gel to mute them and the brows out.
Runaway Beauties At Cynthia Rowley
The Cynthia Rowley girl lost a bit of her girly innocence and gained a harder edge thanks to an edgy yet sweet look created by MAC’s Makky and Redken’s Bok-Hee. Working with the theme of a beautiful girl who turns runaway, Makky created a gorgeous wash of pinky-purple color across models’ entire lids, then lined the upper lashline with a hard black liner that had a subtly retro shape. Lashes were curled and left free of mascara (a big emerging trend we’re seeing for Spring 2010). Skin was semi-matte with a little bit of contouring and highlighting and lips were left natural. Bok-Hee complemented this look with a 50’s rockabilly hairstyle left slightly askew. She sectioned hair into two parts, leaving the back as a dry and loose ponytails with flat sides. The top triangle section was rolled into an off-center faux bang using a hair donut she had removed the stuffing from and cut to fit each model’s forehead.
Edwardian Elegance at Rag & Bone
Hair and makeup backstage at Rag & Bone drew inspiration from Edwardian times and created a look that was both proper and slightly mussed up. Revlon’s Gucci Westman “created light and shadows” on the face using a combination of matte and shimmery shades. Eyes were highlighted with a cream and shimmery gold eye shadow layered close to the lashline and a dark brown matte shadow all over the lid and smudged underneath the lower lashline. Skin was “supple and shiny” with highlighter all over and lips were a nude matte. Frédéric Fekkai lead stylist Teddy Charles created a full and textured half-up hairstyle by saturating hair with wave spray and then rolling it and crimping it by holding it tightly in his fist. He then backcombed strands and added a matte finish by covering the hair in a generous helping of dry shampoo. Finally, he pulled the sides back into a volumized half-up creation that was tied off with a fabric remnant from the collection.
Chocolate-y Cat Eyes at Georges Chakra
Sunkissed bronze skin and golden chocolate-y cat eyes was the look at Georges Chakra. Bronzer was used all over with a concentration on the cheeks. Lips were a peachy pink stain. Hair was crimped and pulled into an off-kilter french twist.
Aristoctratic Appeal at Adam
The inspiration for the look at Adam was a rich aristocratic girl that has just spent the summer abroad. Her face was sunkissed with a matte bronzer. Lips were a sheer, velvety peach. Hair was ultra clean and unfussy with a precision
center part to define the look.
Pale Pink Eyes at Alice+Olivia
Pale pink eyes and textured hair was the look at Alice+Olivia. With creamy pink blush highlighted with pink shadow, the “good girl” look was both gorgeous and attainable. Tight curls were created with curling irons for lots of volume.
Derek Lam
Rainbow-hued eyes inspired by Coney Island dominated at Derek Lam. Tom Pecheux for NARS Cosmetics incorporated several bright shades of NARS shadows swept onto lids for a carnival effect. Lead stylist Orlando Pita worked his magic to
create a wavy, textured ponytail with tucked-under ends.

With awards season kicking off in the fall and endless red carpet events year-round, celebrities are always thinking about looking their best in the limelight. While we cannot all be superstars with personal glam squads, you can borrow these tricks of the trade to look just as red carpet ready as any A-lister.
Sparkling Smile – Nothing ruins a red carpet photo like a lackluster smile. Enhance your pearly whites with Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal. The newest strip molds to your teeth temporarily so that you can talk and drink for whitening anytime, anywhere. It also comes off without leaving messy residue behind. The whitening kit costs about $45 and will leave a lasting whiter smile for an entire year, making whitening an affordable feat.
H2O – Moisturizing is important, but any expert will tell you that the best way for skin to look gorgeous is to drink plenty of water. When your body is hydrated, you will look and feel your best. Adequate intake of water, about eight glasses a day, provides bright eyes, a radiant complexion, and increased energy.
Go for the Bronze – A red carpet dress almost always requires showing some skin. Brighten your look up with a tanning mousse or body lotion. Use a formula that allows for gradual build-up, to build your way up to the shade that works best for you. Some lotions even have skin firming effects, which will further glam up your gams.
Focus Factor – When it comes to make-up, don’t over-do it. Focus on one area to really make a statement. If you choose a bold pink or a bright red lip color, use a neutral eye shadow. If you go for smoky eyes, use a light pink or nude stain on the lips.
Tame Your Mane – Having great hair will really pull your look together. Deep condition your hair every two weeks for the healthiest hair possible and prevent frizz by shampooing your hair the night before. Sleep with hair wrapped in a loose bun and you will awaken to luscious waves. A great way to add some style for the big night out is to tie the waves back into a low ponytail. Make a deep side part and place the ponytail two inches off to one side. Add a shine serum to acquire a silky, gleaming ‘do.

I’ve moved!
At some point this past year, having been purposefully unemployed, my husband and I decided to make a big change in our environment. More than a year ago we quit our jobs and sold our house in Portland, Oregon in search of a joint purpose. What we anticipated to include a lot of traveling, did, but our time off included a lot of other experiences as well. We visited a plethora of cities and small towns and it became obvious to both of us that the Washington, D.C. area held the most opportunity for our interests. So we are here successfully pursuing our dreams in this land of opportunity.
This weekend I volunteered at D.C.’s first ever VegFest and it was a blast. The only problem is that my only exposure to anything sugarless were little samples of Larabar’s (which the peanut butter flavor really rocked my world). Other than that, I was quite frustrated at the beautiful, delicious-looking pastries because none that I asked about were sweetened naturally. There are a million places I want to explore here in the city, and I know local, naturally sweetened goodies must exist somewhere out here.
So far, my favorite place to grocery shop for naturally sweetened items is MOM’s (My Organic Market), which is both more affordable than most health food stores and within two miles of where I live.
Looking forward to exploring and discovering everything this area has to offer, and sharing with you here.
