Mad Influx of "Moroccan Oils" …Not The Animal You Thought You Purchased

Oils - the magical Fruit….
Killer Strands believes highly in natural earth grown organic oils for hair health. They really are remarkable provided the proper combo is used
Wow.
This is mind bending - last year when I first was searching out ARGAN/Moroccan Oils I never thought the ‘idea’ would catch on to the effect it has. Usually I am great at picking out trends and future popular items I was a buyer for 3 stores for years - - I was paid but I did it for fun, which that it was . . . fun. I would have picked this as being a California ONLY trend and a ‘high-end’ fad not ‘across the board as I see it now. I saw a “version” of a Moroccan oil at Target today that’s when I knew I had to touch on this subject. The key word in that sentence is “VERSION”.
I came home and did a “search” on listings of “Moroccan oils” of all sorts… most of them I had seen . . some were new. BUT and this is super important here: the problem with all of these so-called Moroccan ( or Argan) oils is what the first few ingredients are.
Do all of you know what the laws are ??? which are made by the FDA ( Food and Drug Administration) and FTC ( Federal Trade Commission ) ??
The laws are defined into the category of
labeling Personal Care Products…for our purposes.
“labeling that is mandatory on personal care products”
There are 150 rules about those labels ( at least).
From the sizes of the font. . . to the color of the ink . . .
to the chemical names or INCI names as we call them — {pronounced ink-eeee}
names that must be printed properly on the back - and most importantly to us with an honest chemists mind….the ‘order the names are listed on the label’.
I’m going to explain the basic key points….that I feel you all should be made aware of so that you can protect yourselves from products not following the rules ( which 80 - 90% DON’T)
I’m not a “rules” person . . .
I am the queen of being a REBEL
Ask my mom and my ex
But these, need to be known to protect your body from ingredients that can harm your body, your immune system and your hair !
The Laws state that the names of each ingredient must be put on the label in its “technical name” instead of its common name.
For example……..
- Shea Butter - its INCI name is………………..Butyrospermum parkii
- Jojoba oil- its INCI name is…………………….Simmondsia Chinensis Oil
- St.Johns Wort- its INCI name is…………..Hypericum Perforatum
- Argan Oil - its INCI name is…………………….Argania Spinosa Oil
these are all common ingredients I use and love and I know that people don’t know when they see those names in that manner - - the “latin version” of what in the Hell they are . . . . .
Here is the name of a bad ingredient:….
the INCI name: is….. Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
I have no plans of carrying on a “witch hunt” here, just teaching.
But if you were to see:
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate in a product next to Butyrospermum parkii
to the novice eye, the terms look daunting…right?
They both look like chemicals that are terrible for the body - there is no way to tell the difference ( unless of course you GOOGLE every ingredient while at the store !
I feel deeply the Cosmetic manufacturers lobbied and won this method of “labeling” - - which to them keeps the consumer in the dark - still, and to me >> needs to be fixed.
Wouldn’t you rather see the words, Shea butter instead of Butyrospermum parkii… its why I use those words on ’some’ of KillerStrands own products.
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfateis a TERRIBLE ingredient….I did my own little experiments with it….looking at hair strands under my microscope - - - after sitting in a solution of it and water….over the course of 4-6 & 8 weeks.
The Results said everything.
Kill the Sulfates once and for all…
I’m not trained in chemistry enough to completely understand ‘why’ the sulfates pretty much french-fry female hair strands…..but I am trained enough to tell you for 100% >> THEY DO.
See how the deception starts ? When you first pick up the product — when you are in the store. You look at the back of the bottle like I have told you to over and over…and you look at most ingredients listed, these are the ‘latin’ versions…the version only Cosmetic chemists know the meaning of and the manufacturers are banking on this. That you will not know the difference between the “good/healthy” ingredients versus the “bad/unhealthy” ones. I have written letters to both entities suggesting and REQUESTING they change their standards to something the “PUBLIC” will know and recognize. I feel the big manufacturing companies don’t want you to know the truth about the ingredients….by pushing for this to be the method in which the government entities have to use.
lets get this straight first: I dislike politics. Immensely.
I try to stay educated about what goes on, but only started voting 8 years ago.
but somehow the labeling on your personal care products is tied into legislation that is lobbied for and won by politicians that are controlled by big corporations like Proctor and Gamble, L’Oreal, Dow Corning (owns most patents on silicone’s)….and the list goes on . . .
I’m not educated ( nor do I want to be) in how that all works… what I do
want is: to educate all of you on what the cold-hard-facts are. So you will watch out for as many things as is possible.
The yucky ingredients I am concerned about you all applying to your hair(scalp) in this instance are the silicone’s all these companies are trying to get past you. Argan oil is the 1 oil that was discovered by vacationing Europeans in Morocco on Holiday about 8-9 years ago. Look at the length of time it took and the weird road and curves it had to make to get to the point of having a ‘cult’ following and now being available at TARGET! Where it is cut with a completely opposite ‘oil-like’ substance (silicone) and was lucky enough to be “soluble” with Argan oil, not all oils are soluble with each other…in other words they cannot all be mixed together. . . their properties don’t align. Therefore it can be like mixing water with oil….they can clash and no “mixing” can occur. So it is not possible to take 2 - 4 or 7 random oils and hope they will mix. Chances are — they won’t.
So lets try to make this clear for you . . .
Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone and Cyclopentasiloxane are the 1st Culprits I am wanting to educate you about, which, last time I checked … are made by Dow Corning and are made in Michigan NOT Morocco, maybe the “M” threw them. These 3 silicone’s are different weights - that is basically the difference in them. In the past I was making 3 different silicone serums - - because if you are going to use a flat iron every day, they must be used to protect your hair. But since watching all the damage - all the addictions –>to, all the french-fried hair, I pretty much now promote not using flat irons, at all. I had no choice - healthy hair is the most important factor in the 10,000HEADS Regimen.
A huge problem with these Silicone’s: they are the same substance they put in breast implants, there is just something creepy about putting that same man-made goopy thick syrup in the hair to me — what they are in the Cosmetic Chemistry world are cheap fillers as well as heat protectants.![]()
I wonder how many of you know about the huge class action suit brought against Dow Corning way back in the 90’s. I had at least 25 clients, friends and family deeply involved in this case, if affected me deeply. The case had over 1/2 million (!) women in it, I believe it was one of the largest Class-Action suits in history. The jest of it was, the women all believed that the silicone (combinations of cyclomethicone, dimethicone trimethicone - etc…) that was in the implants , caused Autoimmune disorders in all of them….+ neurological disorders and various ailments from severe to mild pain and everything in between….. that were permanent and basically had destroyed their lives. To have that many people develop the exact same disorders, I for one - -100% believe that is exactly what happened - not a doubt in my mind. So this subject is close to my heart . . . I believe Dow Corning is the perfect example of a big corporation that has gotten away with murder.
Although technically: the women won.
Dow Corning was told they had to pay close to $3.2 Billion Dollars to all these women .
Dow Corning then filed bankruptcy ( of course) to protect themselves under Chapter 11.
I was furious and to this date they are reportedly still jacking the women around, so they don’t have to pay. All the while remaining in business and still selling millions in silicone on a daily basis. I honestly and truthfully think silicone, ALL silicone , should be banned for any applications to and on the human body. There are many industrial and manufacturing uses for silicone’s, they need to stay in those arena’s.
Real natural earth grown oils are what will benefit your hair - period - the way God intended them to be. Normally I don’t like to be so forthright in ‘blowin our own horn’, but geez its seems like there are a lot of copy cats out there….which only means there are a whole line-up of more to come. So watch out - everyone, the BEWARE button needs to be tapped.
FYI: Abyssinian Oil is the lightest, most wonderful oil and is the main ingredient in our version of the so called Moroccan Oil craze…
I really don’t like to think we are even is the same boat. . . but if we must for clarity to you…thed
is Organic Virgin Rosehips Oil, which is more expensive than both Argan and Abyssinian! In Natural Earth grown Oils, you can pretty much gather an oils benefit by its price. Argan was super expensive, then everyone wanted it which created a huge competition factor – resulting in a lower price. Which we loved, but with all of GLEAM’S Oils being expensive (even Jojoba isn’t cheap)- the product remains low priced, for how much it costs us. KC uses a secret combination of 3 Amber Resin essences amber resin - steming from Premium Dark Amber. Using the finest authentic amber oils available - made with pure, high quality and certified organic ingredients, created with 90% certified organic ingredients.
There is a whole lot of love & history in this bottle …
besides all the benefits to your hair
and watch your hair flourish.
Morrocan Oils 101

Here are a list of Moroccan Oils from Folica.com which seems to be one of the biggest site on the web.

_____________
I have no idea IF it is, but LEGALLY they are following the rules….which is what I want to make you aware of
The laws and rules are tainted by the huge manufacturing companies and I want you to be aware and on the lookout. . . for all your products.
Treat your body like the temple it is.
Being careful of everything you apply to the largest organ of the human body………..the skin - why? I don’t think most of you realize that whatever you apply to your skin (and scalp) seeps into your system. In melts into the skin and enters the body, so be careful of everything. Don’t turn into a freak about it, but pay attention to what you apply to that skin/scalp for the health of your hair and body.
2nd this dumbass company that I want to point out to you runs around “copying trends” CHI is the company that brought you BIOSILK that apparently now is sold in COSTCO. Good move Chi. I will give it to CHI for introducing the idea of the silicone serum in “big way” to the world…they are not who invented it, they are who had the most money behind them and copied the companies that did ( Avlon and Kera Care).
Here is their introduction to the Argan oil game:
and its Ingredients:
Cyclomethicone, Dimethiconol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Propylene Glycol***, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract*, Alcohol Denat*, Olea Europaea, (Olive) Fruit Oil*/**, Hydrolyzed Silk*, Phenyltrimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate)*, Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate)*, Pathenol (Pro-Vitamin B), Anthernis Nobillis Flower Oil**, Cymbogon Schoenanthus Oil**, Geranium Maculatum Oil**, Origanium Majorana Leaf Oil**, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) oil**, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Oil**, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract**, Nasturtium Officinale Extract**, Trigonella Oil**, Jasmin Officinale Flower Extract**, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil**, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil**, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein*, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch*, Benzophenone-4, Phenoxyethenol, Caprylyl Glycol
These oils are listed in the order in which they are popular ( therefore in how they sell) . . . .
By a company I have never heard of called One and ONLY:
Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol,. C12-15, Alkyl Benzoate, Fragrance (Parfum), Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Yellow 11 (CI47000), Red 17 (CI 26100).
So there you have my opinion on silicone’s and what they do to your body. If a 3 $$Billion Dollar Lawsuit won, and over 1/2 million women received money from one of the largest and wealthiest companies in our country, then there is something seriously wrong with its product, in my humble opinion. A few of my friends and a couple family members - became extremely ill from contact with silicone’s - - & remember that - these are people that are not wimps and are very far from hypochondriac’s … so I have had a thing about silicone’s and staying away from them for over 20 years….
I’ve tried to give them a break….but just writing this post has reminded me once again
the further AWAY they are the better
Now when you use a product like GLEAM that frankly is as PURE as the driven snow those
