The Skin Care Answer Book

Posted by Reporter on Monday

The Skin Care Answer BookMilady, part of Cengage Learning and a leading provider of beauty and wellness learning solutions, today announced the publication of The Skin Care Answer Book, written by industry expert Dr. Mark Lees. This full-color, softcover reference book is written in a Q&A format using non-technical language to help educate skin care professionals and consumers.

What causes wrinkles? Does what I eat really affect acne or cause flare ups? Why do I need to wear sunscreen if I am not outside? These nagging questions and many more are answered by Dr. Lees in The Skin Care Answer Book. The book addresses key topics to educate students, licensed estheticians and consumers. Chapters are organized by subject, making it reader-friendly and easy to navigate.

“This book gives skin care professionals and consumers alike access to scientific, fact-based answers to their most pressing questions,” said Dawn Gerrain, president, Milady. “Authored by Dr. Lees, an award-winning skin care professional who has developed his own skin care products – many of which are used by celebrities, The Skin Care Answer Book will be an invaluable addition to anyone’s book shelf.”

The Skin Care Answer Book covers general skin-related topics, including a basic understanding of the skin and how it ages, as well as questions regarding dry skin, sensitive skin, acne and allergy-prone skin. The book also focuses on caring for sun-exposed skin and, throughout the content, helps readers perform their own skin analysis in order to determine which skin care products best suit their individual needs.

Rx Sun Care Rite Aide

Posted by Reporter on

Rx Sun CareRite Aid today announced it will expand its own exclusive Rx Suncare line with two new products — Rx Suncare Sport SPF 70 and Rx Suncare HairGuard. As consumers look to save money in this tough economy, all Rite Aid Rx Suncare products are priced under $10 and offer the same protection against the sun as national and specialty brands.

Rite Aid Rx Suncare products with a sun protection factor (SPF) carry The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation as an effective UV sunscreen. All items are fragrance free, non-comedogenic (does not block pores), provide stabilized broad spectrum protection and are supplemented by antioxidant/anti-aging vitamins.

The new Rx Suncare products — Rx Suncare Sport SPF 70 and Rx Suncare HairGuard — will be available in Rite Aid stores in California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington this month and in stores throughout the rest of the chain in April. The new products will be added to Rite Aid’s online store at www.riteaid.com in April. The eight other Rx Suncare products are available now online and in all Rite Aid stores.

Rx Suncare Sport SPF 70, which carries The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, capitalizes on the growing demand by consumers for a high SPF and that at least at one time or another, almost every person will have a need for a very high SPF. For those participating in sports, Rx Suncare Sport SPF 70 is highly water and sweat resistant, and the 70 SPF gives them better protection for a longer period of time. Those who are very fair skinned, must be outside for extended periods of time, have skin cancer, are immune suppressed or may be taking medications which cause photo sensitivity also are better protected with a higher SPF.

Skin type, elevation, exposure conditions (water, snow, reflective surfaces) and length of exposure all impact the decision for the correct SPF level.

Rx Suncare Hair Guard is a color saver and contains a unique heat activated conditioner, providing shine with leave-in conditioners and light reflective micro particles. Equivalent to an SPF 20 on skin, it protects chemically processed hair (color, perms, straightening) from damage caused by UV exposure. UV light exposure dulls color and strips hair of amino acids, making it weak, causing color to fade and ends to split.

The Rx Suncare line includes the following products:

– Rx Suncare Lip Balm Sunblock, SPF 45, .15 oz.

– Rx Suncare Faces Sunblock, SPF 50, 4 oz.

– Rx Suncare Advanced Protection, SPF 30, 6 oz.

– Rx Suncare Advanced Protection, SPF 50, 6 oz.

– Rx Suncare Sport Sunblock SPF 50, 6 oz. (highly water resistant)

– Rx Suncare Sport Sunblock SPF 70, 6 oz. (highly water resistant), 6 oz. — NEW

– Rx Suncare Kids Sunblock, SPF 50, 6 oz.

– Rx Suncare Advanced Protection Continuous Spray, SPF 30, 6 oz.

– Rx Suncare Burn Relief Mask, 6 oz.

– Rx Suncare HairGuard, 8 oz. — NEW

The SPF rating primarily indicates relative protection from erythema (skin reddening) caused by the sun’s UVB (short-wave) rays. The SPF rating is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce sunburn on protected skin to the amount of time needed to cause sunburn on unprotected skin.

Sun exposure is the main cause of skin damage including sunburn, premature skin aging and most skin cancers. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation serves as a useful guide to sun protection products. It deems that regular use of these selected sun protection products, when applied properly, may help reduce skin damage due to overexposure to UV rays.

Rite Aid said the new line is part of its strategy to increase its private brand and exclusive brand offerings that offer consumers quality and value at lower prices, as well as continue to position Rite Aid as a first-choice health and beauty destination.

“Customer response to the new Rx Suncare line exceeded our expectations in 2009 and led to our introduction of two items requested by our customers — a higher SPF sport product and a hair protection product,” said Bryan Shirtliff, Rite Aid Senior Vice President, Category Management. “Rite Aid again is very happy to be working with The Skin Cancer Foundation to educate and raise awareness about the risks and proper prevention of skin cancer from UV rays.”

“Rite Aid is a wonderful partner in helping us educate the public about the importance of sun protection,” said Perry Robins, MD, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. “Our Seal of Recommendation program enables us to educate consumers when they are making important sun protection decisions. When they see our Seal, consumers can be confident that they are purchasing a safe and effective sun protection product.”

To earn the Seal of Recommendation, each of Rite Aid’s Rx Suncare products underwent stringent laboratory testing for safety and efficacy standards, including an SPF of 15 or greater, validation of the SPF number by testing on 20 people, acceptable test results for phototoxic reactions and contact irritation, and substantiation for any claims that a sunscreen is water- or sweat-resistant.

Vivoderm Zinc Repairing Cream for Acne and Anti Aging

Posted by Reporter on

VivodermVivoderm Laboratories LLC (vivoderm.com), a natural and scientific skin care company based in Southern California, introduces a zinc repairing cream as part of their line of skin care products to combat acne and signs of aging. Vivoderm founder and holistic dermatologist, Dr. H. Adhami and a team of physicians and scientists developed the cream, through years of clinical and personal research.

Vivoderm is dedicated to finding effective natural treatments to various skin conditions, for prevention, and skin health maintenance. The Vivoderm zinc repairing cream was developed to be used alone or in combination with Vivoderm’s other skin care products to protect patient’s skin, combat acne, prevent acne scars, reduce appearance of wrinkles and promote vitality. It is a potent repairing agent that has numerous benefits.

Zinc, the prime ingredient in the repairing cream, is a naturally occurring metallic element that balances the production of the oil in the skin, making it very effective in the prevention and treatment of acne. Zinc contains natural antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties and is essential for tissue growth and healing. As a physical sun block, it naturally protects against UV light, and is commonly used as a safe, non-toxic sunscreen.

Acne typically begins with an enlarged hair follicle, commonly known as a pore, plugged with oil, dead skin and bacteria. As the skin produces more oil, bacteria flourish and are lodged within the swollen follicle, eventually forming acne, or severe inflammation of the skin.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) in 2001, acne, or severe inflammation of the skin, is a problem that affects most people at some point in their lives:

Nearly 17 million Americans have acne.

Acne is the most common skin disease in the US between the ages of 12 and 24, almost 85% of people develop acne.

Zinc is crucial to healthy oil production. If your diet is low in zinc, this may cause acne breakouts. Skin cells may fail to regenerate and build up within the hair follicle the point of closure. Zinc oxide has been shown to open up blockages and combat inflammation. The Vivoderm natural zinc repairing cream is infused with additional herbs and minerals to maintain the skin’s moisture while diminishing the visible signs of aging.

Avril Lavigne on Acne Be Proactiv

Posted by Reporter on

Avril LavigneAvril Lavigne today said she hopes to reach millions of teens and young women with an important message about acne, summed up as:  “Be Proactiv.”

The award-winning singer and actress recently signed with Guthy-Renker to play a prominent role in the launch of new Proactiv, an improved version of the world’s number-one acne-treatment system.

“I started breaking out when I was 14,” said Lavigne. “It was my first year of high school, which was already intimidating. Going to a new school and meeting new people was hard enough; having to deal with zits on top of that didn’t really make it easier,” she explained.

Avril Lavigne joins one of the longest and most renowned list of celebrities ever to speak out for a skin care product.  All Proactiv endorsers started out as customers first.

“After trying everything—from toothpaste to rubbing alcohol, men’s aftershave to tea tree oil—I started using Proactiv. Fortunately, it really worked for me. Today, I still use Proactiv to help keep my skin clear.”

Avril’s story is sure to resonate with young people who are experiencing the same challenges. Acne is a very common skin condition that has been linked to more profound issues in teens including depression, anxiety and social withdrawal. And, it’s not just a passing phase. Acne is chronic and can last in teens up to 7 years and in adults 20 years or more.

Pediatric dermatology studies show that the earlier acne starts, the more likely it is to increase in severity over time. Additionally, the likelihood of permanent physical scarring also increases the longer acne is left untreated.

Some celebrities might not feel comfortable talking about acne, but not Lavigne. “I’m totally cool to talk about Proactiv and acne because I have dealt with it,” she said. “Acne is a drag. It’s not cute. It’s not fun. I think it’s really important to take care of your skin—especially from an early age.”

“I think it’s gutsy for Avril to talk about acne and her Proactiv story, but she wanted to do it, and she wanted to do it in a plain-speaking, matter-of-fact way that is relatable,” said Lenny Lieberman, head of Guthy-Renker Studio, producer of the new ads.

“It’s important to feel good about yourself and when you have good skin, you feel good! I was really lucky to have found Proactiv,” Avril said. “It worked for my skin.”

Avril Lavigne, who at the age of 17 secured eight Grammy nominations and four Juno Awards for her debut album Let Go, will begin appearing in the national Proactiv broadcast campaign this month.  In 2008, Lavigne released her third album, The Best Damn Thing, which included the smash hit “Girlfriend,” which shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 and was named the top download of 2007 having been downloaded more than 7.3 million times in 8 different languages.

Lavigne is also the creator of Abbey Dawn, a lifestyle brand which is available exclusively at Kohl’s.  The collection blends authentic rock with a feminine edge and will include quality apparel and accessories at a great price.  In 2009, Lavigne released her first fragrance called Black Star, created by Proctor & Gamble Prestige Products with her second fragrance to be released in 2010. The fragrance captures Lavigne’s dynamic style and energetic personality, inspiring girls to standout and embrace their individuality.  In 2006, Lavigne branched out into acting, appearing in Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation and lending her voice to Dreamworks’ animated film Over the Hedge.

Lavigne is currently in the studio working on a new, yet-untitled album for RCA Records.  For more information visit www.avrillavigne.com.
